Visa Interview: 18 Common Questions and How to Answer Them
By VisaViews Editorial ยท 18 Aug 2026
For many destinations the visa interview is the final hurdle, and it can be surprisingly short โ sometimes under five minutes. Officers are not trying to trick you; they are checking that your story is consistent, your intentions are genuine and you will follow the rules of your visa. Preparation is everything.
Before you go in
Know your own application inside out. Officers can see your forms, so your spoken answers must match what you wrote. Bring your documents neatly organised, dress smartly, and be ready to answer clearly and briefly.
Tourist and visit visa questions
- Why do you want to visit this country?
- How long will you stay, and what is your itinerary?
- Who is paying for the trip?
- Have you travelled abroad before?
- What do you do for a living, and will you return to your job?
The hidden question behind all of these is: will you leave when your visa ends? Emphasise your ties home โ job, family, property, studies.
Student visa questions
- Why this course, this university and this country?
- How will this degree help your career back home?
- Who is funding your studies, and how?
- What are your plans after graduation?
- Why not study the same course in your own country?
Show that you are a genuine student with a clear academic and career plan, not someone using study as a shortcut to migrate.
Work visa questions
- Tell me about your job offer and your employer.
- What are your qualifications and experience for this role?
- What will your salary and duties be?
- Have you worked abroad before?
How to answer well
- Be consistent. Your answers must match your paperwork exactly.
- Be concise. Answer the question asked, then stop. Do not over-explain.
- Be honest. Never invent details; a single caught lie can mean a long ban.
- Be calm. Nervousness is normal; rehearse out loud so your answers flow.
Red flags to avoid
- Vague plans ("I just want to see the country")
- Answers that contradict your application
- No clear reason to return home
- Memorised, robotic scripts that fall apart under a follow-up question
Treat the interview as a short, honest conversation about a plan you genuinely believe in. If your documents and your story line up, most interviews are over before you know it.
