This may cause problems for over 100,000 international students who planned to study in America in 2025. Many are now looking at other countries like Canada and the UK for their education.

The U.S. government has paused all new student visa interviews and started canceling some student visas, mostly for Chinese students. This has created confusion and fear among students who want to study in the U.S. this year.

1. Visa Interviews Stopped Around the World

On May 27, 2025, the U.S. said that all new student visa interviews are paused. They are updating their systems to check people’s social media and other online activity.

Many students from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Brazil had planned to get their visa interviews in June or July. Now they may not get their visas in time for the fall semester starting in August or September.

There is no date yet for when the interviews will start again.

2. Chinese Students’ Visas Being Cancelled

The U.S. is also canceling visas for many Chinese students, especially those studying science and technology (STEM fields).

News agencies say that up to 50,000 Chinese students in California alone could be affected. Some students were told their visas were canceled without warning. More students across the U.S. may face the same issue.

There are about 277,000 Chinese students currently in the U.S., so this is a big change.

3. U.S. Government Tries to Stop Harvard from Hosting International Students

In a surprise move, the U.S. government also tried to stop Harvard University from having international students. A judge said “no” for now, but many top universities are now worried.

Harvard has around 6,800 students from other countries. If the U.S. continues this policy, more schools could be affected.

Why This Matters

International students spend a lot of money in the U.S.—about $38 billion every year. They pay tuition, rent, and buy food and supplies. They also help universities with research and diversity.

If these students don’t come, universities will lose money and talent. Many may now choose to go to Canada, the UK, Australia, or Germany instead.

As one of the world’s top study destinations, Australia will remain attractive, but the barriers to entry are rising.

Prospective students should begin preparing early, budgeting for increased costs, and ensuring academic readiness. The message is unmistakable: in 2025, studying in Australia will require more than just ambition—it will require resilience, resources, and strategy.

The court found that Malta’s programme undermines the integrity of EU citizenship by granting nationality without any genuine connection to the nation.

The ruling delivers a decisive blow to Malta’s citizenship-by-investment (CBI) model, which allowed wealthy individuals—primarily non-EU nationals—to acquire Maltese and, by extension, EU citizenship in exchange for an investment of approximately €1 million. The scheme provided visa-free access to over 180 countries and full rights within the European Union, including the freedom to live, work, and study anywhere in the bloc.

The ECJ emphasized that “a Member State cannot grant its nationality—and thereby EU citizenship—in return for predetermined payments or investments,” stating that such practices effectively convert citizenship into a commercial transaction. While EU nations retain the right to define their own nationality laws, the court reaffirmed that this must be exercised in alignment with shared European principles and mutual trust.

Malta Defends the Scheme, But Faces Legal Ultimatum

Despite the ruling, Maltese authorities have maintained that the programme is legal under EU treaties and vital for attracting foreign capital. However, the ECJ’s verdict is final and binding. Malta must now dismantle the scheme or risk facing infringement procedures, which may include financial sanctions and limitations on its participation in key EU decisions.

Malta’s programme had long been under fire from Brussels, civil society groups, and transparency watchdogs who raised red flags over money laundering, security threats, and a lack of transparency. The European Commission initiated legal proceedings against Malta in 2022, culminating in the ECJ’s judgment this week.

Implications for Investors and Citizenship Seekers

The court’s decision will have immediate consequences for potential applicants:

New Investors: The pathway to EU citizenship through Malta is now closed.

Current Passport Holders: The court has not ruled on revoking existing passports, but increased scrutiny is expected.

Other Nations: Countries like Cyprus and Bulgaria, which previously operated similar programmes, had already suspended them under EU pressure. This ruling may prompt others to abandon any remaining CBI mechanisms.

Alternative Avenues Remain for Global Mobility

Although EU citizenship-by-investment routes are closing, options like golden visa programmes still exist in Portugal, Greece, and Spain. These offer residency—not immediate citizenship—through investment in real estate or business. Additionally, Caribbean nations such as Dominica and Saint Kitts and Nevis continue to run citizenship programmes, though they lack EU access.

The ECJ’s firm stance marks a turning point in the European Union’s commitment to safeguarding its shared values. Citizenship, the court affirms, must reflect national identity and meaningful integration—not simply financial ability.

The move follows the global trend of countries like Portugal, Estonia, and Dubai, which have already introduced specialized visas targeting remote professionals. Officials state that this program will not only encourage longer stays but also contribute to local economies without affecting the domestic job market.

Eligibility Criteria for the Digital Nomad Visa

To qualify for the newly introduced Digital Nomad Visa, applicants must meet a set of strict requirements:

Authorities highlight that the combination of affordability, accessibility, and lifestyle benefits make the Philippines an attractive destination for remote workers seeking a balance between professional growth and personal adventure.

Launch of New e-Visa for Indian Travellers

In a related move to boost tourism further, the Philippines introduced a new electronic visa (e-Visa) system in December 2024, specifically targeting Indian passport holders. Managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the e-Visa system aims to simplify the application process by enabling online applications, thus eliminating the need for embassy visits.

Key features of the new e-Visa include:

A fully online application process.

With India being one of the fastest-growing outbound travel markets, the government expects this initiative to significantly increase the number of Indian tourists visiting the country.

Additional Visa Options Available

Besides the Digital Nomad Visa, the Philippines continues to offer a range of visa options catering to different visitor profiles:

Rebuilding the Philippines’ Image as a Global Destination

The dual initiatives—the introduction of the Digital Nomad Visa and the e-Visa system for Indian travellers—signal the Philippines’ aggressive push to re-establish itself as a leading destination for both tourism and remote work in 2025.

Officials emphasize that the country’s blend of scenic beauty, lower living costs, English-speaking environment, and improved visa accessibility creates a compelling offer for remote workers and tourists alike.

As the global appetite for flexible working arrangements grows, the Philippines now offers remote professionals an opportunity to combine career ambitions with life in a tropical paradise.

And if you’re a skilled worker looking to land a job in the U.S., 2025 might just be your golden ticket.<ins data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4311891042376581" data-ad-slot="6096066337" data-reader-unique-id="11"></ins>

Let’s break down the data, dissect the sectors in crisis, and uncover what this massive labor gap means for you—whether you’re job hunting from overseas or considering a career pivot within the U.S.

The Big Picture: What’s Fueling the Shortage?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, America’s labor market hasn’t been the same. Initially coined “The Great Resignation,” the trend has evolved into “The Great Reshuffle,” with tens of millions switching jobs in search of better pay, flexibility, and purpose. Though hiring outpaces quitting, the gap between open roles and available talent continues to widen.

In 2024 alone, the U.S. saw 6.5 million unemployed individuals—but a staggering number of jobs, particularly skilled ones, remain unfilled.

If labor force participation matched pre-pandemic levels, two million more workers would be in the system today.

Every major industry is hiring—but not everyone is qualified.

Starting from October 1, 2024, Finland has made key changes to its Citizenship Act, increasing the required period of residence for citizenship from five years to eight years. The Finnish government hopes these new rules will strengthen applicants’ connections to the country before granting them citizenship.

Longer Residency Requirement for Citizenship

The revised law now requires most applicants to live in Finland for at least eight years before applying for citizenship. However, there are exceptions. For applicants who meet Finland’s language proficiency requirements, the minimum residency period remains five years.

Any applications submitted before October 1, 2024, will be processed under the old five-year rule. However, those filed on or after that date must meet the new eight-year requirement.

Rules on Time Spent Abroad

The updated regulations also change how time abroad is counted toward the required residence period. Applicants can now spend up to 365 days outside Finland without affecting their eligibility for citizenship. Out of those 365 days, no more than 90 days may come from the year just before the citizenship decision is made.

Also read How to Sponsor your family in Canada?

If applicants spend more than the permitted 365 days abroad, the extra time will not count toward the required residence period. This change ensures applicants maintain a meaningful presence in Finland during their qualifying years.

Faster Citizenship for Refugees and Stateless Individuals

The new rules also improve the application process for refugees and stateless individuals. The Finnish Immigration Service will now treat their applications as urgent, ensuring decisions are made within one year of submission.

In addition, the way the residence period is calculated for refugees has changed. It will no longer begin from the date they applied for asylum. Instead, the count will start from the day they receive their first continuous residence permit (A permit).

Streamlined Online Application Process

The Finnish Immigration Service encourages applicants to use the Enter Finland online service, making the process easier and faster. In some cases, applicants can avoid visiting a service point in person if they meet specific requirements:

They are at least 18 years old.

They submit the application on their own behalf.

They log in using strong electronic identification (such as Finnish online banking credentials).

They pay the required fee before submitting their application.

Backlog of Citizenship Applications

Currently, the Finnish Immigration Service is managing a backlog of approximately 28,000 applications, leading to longer processing times. The surge in applications over recent years is partly responsible for the delays.

Also read How to Get Refugee Status in Canada?

Many applications have also been delayed due to applicants not meeting all the eligibility requirements, further slowing down the process.

To address the backlog, the Finnish Immigration Service aims to gradually reduce the waiting times, with the goal of clearing the backlog by 2027.

Finland’s decision to extend the residence requirement for citizenship reflects its goal of fostering stronger ties between applicants and the country. While the new rules demand a longer stay, they also streamline the process for refugees and stateless individuals and make online applications easier for eligible residents.

Although there is currently a backlog in citizenship applications, the Finnish Immigration Service is committed to clearing it in the coming years to ensure smoother processing in the future. These changes aim to make the system fair, efficient, and better aligned with the country’s long-term immigration goals.

Indonesia has made significant progress with its Golden Visa Program, issuing almost 500 golden visas within two months of its official launch in July 2024. This new residency-by-investment scheme aims to attract wealthy investors and boost the country’s economy.

Halfway to 1,000 Golden Visas Goal

The Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, announced that the country is halfway toward its goal of issuing 1,000 golden visas by the end of 2024. “We are approaching 500 registrations, and the numbers keep changing every day,” Karim said.

The Golden Visa Program offers residency permits to foreign nationals in exchange for financial investments. Although Indonesia started a pilot version of the program in 2023, it was officially launched in July 2024 to attract more investors.

Investment Requirements for Golden Visas

The program offers two types of golden visas: a five-year visa and a ten-year visa, each with different investment requirements:

Five-year visa: Requires a minimum investment of $2.5 million.

Ten-year visa: Requires a larger investment of $5 million.

For individuals who prefer not to set up a company, they can secure golden visas through direct deposits.

Five-year visa: Requires a deposit of $350,000.

Ten-year visa: Requires a deposit of $700,000.

Indonesia Seeks High-Quality Travelers and Investments

Indonesian President Joko Widodo emphasized that the Golden Visa Program is designed to attract high-quality travelers and investors to the country. “We’re launching the golden visa to make it easier for foreign nationals to invest and contribute in Indonesia,” President Widodo said.

The President highlighted Indonesia’s stability, natural resources, and positive economic growth, positioning the country as an attractive destination for global investors and talented professionals.

Indonesia is also working on offering special status for foreigners of Indonesian descent, similar to India’s Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) scheme, to build stronger ties with the diaspora.

Investment Goals and Economic Impact

Indonesia aims to attract $101.5 billion in domestic and international direct investment by the end of 2024. Achieving this investment goal is essential to meet the country’s GDP growth target of 5.2%.

Karim noted that even before the official launch, Indonesia had issued about 300 golden visas, generating around $123 million in investment during the pilot phase.

The rapid progress of Indonesia’s Golden Visa Program shows strong interest from investors. With nearly 500 visas issued in just two months, the country is on track to meet its 1,000-visa target by the end of 2024. As Indonesia continues to position itself as an attractive investment hub, the government expects the program to contribute significantly to economic growth and long-term development.

Hong Kong has announced an extension of the validity of multiple-entry visas for nationals of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The new policy, effective immediately, aims to strengthen Hong Kong’s connections with Southeast Asian countries and promote business and tourism in the region.

Visa Validity Extended from Two to Three Years

Chief Executive John Lee revealed that the new policy will extend the multiple-entry visa validity for travelers from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar from two years to three years. The decision also benefits Vietnamese nationals, who have already enjoyed easier visa access since 2023.

“The extension reflects our commitment to tightening relations with ASEAN countries,” Lee said, referring to the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. ASEAN includes Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam.

Faster Immigration and Easier Travel

To make travel even more convenient, Hong Kong will offer self-service immigration clearance for visitors from ASEAN countries. Business travelers and others invited to participate in development activities will have access to a dedicated desk for one-stop visa and immigration processing.

In addition, Hong Kong has canceled the requirement for arrival and departure cards, effective immediately, to simplify entry procedures further.

Focus on ASEAN and Middle Eastern Tourists

The visa policy is part of a broader strategy to attract more tourists from ASEAN and Middle Eastern regions. Chief Executive Lee announced that Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau will soon publish a “Development Blueprint for Hong Kong’s Tourism Industry 2.0.” This initiative will focus on promoting sports, culture, and eco-tourism.

The government also aims to introduce new countryside and coastal travel routes. “We want to develop more tours in areas like Yan Chau Tong to showcase the beauty of our coastline and nature,” Lee explained.

Plans to Boost Tourism with Horse Racing Attractions

To complement the new tourism strategy, the Hong Kong Jockey Club will collaborate with government departments to promote horse racing tourism, a unique attraction for visitors.

21 Million Tourists Visit in First Half of 2024

Tourism plays an important role in Hong Kong’s economy. In the first half of 2024, 21 million tourists visited Hong Kong, showing a 64% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

However, despite the rise in visitor numbers, tourists are spending fewer nights in the city. According to the Tourism Board, visitors stayed an average of 3.2 nights between January and June 2024, a decline from the 4.9 nights reported during the first quarter of 2023.

Hong Kong’s decision to extend visa validity for travelers from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam highlights its focus on fostering stronger regional ties with ASEAN. By simplifying entry procedures and introducing eco-tourism initiatives, the city hopes to attract more international visitors and boost its tourism sector. With new plans on the horizon, Hong Kong is positioning itself as a welcoming destination for travelers from across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Malaysia is calling on Canada to allow Malaysians to travel without visas, aiming to make journeys between the two countries easier. Right now, Canadians can visit Malaysia without a visa for up to three months. Considering this, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has asked Canadian officials to think about dropping visa requirements for Malaysian travelers.

If Canada agrees, Malaysians would be able to visit Canada without applying for a visa, making travel simpler and boosting connections between the two nations.

Strengthening Cybersecurity Collaboration

During a recent meeting between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, they announced the launch of the BlackBerry Cyber Security Centre of Excellence (CCoE) in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. This new center aims to enhance cooperation between Malaysia and Canada in cybersecurity.

Malaysia’s own Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence started operating in March this year. It is set to become an international hub to tackle new cyber threats. The partnership with BlackBerry will boost Malaysia’s cybersecurity efforts and contribute to global security in the digital space.

Advancing Defence Cooperation

Prime Minister Anwar also expressed Malaysia’s readiness to quickly finalize a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation with Canada. Strengthening defense ties is part of Malaysia’s broader plan to enhance cooperation with international partners.

Looking ahead, Malaysia is set to take over as the chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025, officially starting on January 1. This leadership role will allow Malaysia to play a significant part in regional affairs and further promote collaboration with countries like Canada.

Growing Trade Between Malaysia and Canada

Trade between Malaysia and Canada has grown by 25 percent since 2018. This growth is partly due to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which became effective for Malaysia in November 2022.

In the past 15 months, Malaysian businesses have been actively getting Certificates of Origin (CO) for exports to CPTPP partners, including Canada. This shows a positive trend in trade relations and that businesses are making use of the trade agreement’s benefits.

Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, mentioned that although trade with Canada decreased in 2023 compared to 2022, the outlook is still positive. Predictions for this year are optimistic, supported by the World Trade Organization’s forecast of a 3.3 percent growth in merchandise trade for 2024.

At present, there are 96 manufacturing projects in Malaysia with Canadian investment, totaling US$274 million. The top sectors attracting Canadian investments are electrical and electronics (E&E), basic metal products, and wood products. These projects have created jobs for over 11,000 people, contributing significantly to Malaysia’s economy.

Enhancing Agricultural Cooperation

In February, Malaysia and Canada reaffirmed their commitment to work together more closely in agriculture, fisheries, and livestock sectors. They welcomed technical cooperation in agricultural research and development, aiming to improve food security.

During discussions, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, introduced Malaysian agricultural products like pineapples to Canadian officials. He expressed interest in exporting local tropical fruits to the Canadian market. This could open new opportunities for Malaysian farmers and offer more variety to Canadian consumers.

Malaysia’s request for visa-free travel to Canada shows its desire to strengthen relations and make it easier for people to connect. If successful, it would allow Malaysians to travel to Canada more freely, encouraging tourism, business, and cultural exchanges.

The establishment of the BlackBerry Cyber Security Centre of Excellence in Cyberjaya and the focus on cybersecurity collaboration highlight the importance both countries place on tackling global cyber threats together.

With growing trade ties and ongoing discussions on defense and agricultural cooperation, Malaysia and Canada are set to deepen their partnership in many areas. As Malaysia prepares to lead ASEAN in 2025, these developments point to a stronger relationship that could benefit both nations.
